The following is a statement by Mississauga Mayor Bonnie Crombie about the passing of Ron Searle, former city councillor and mayor of Mississauga. Mr. Searle served as mayor from 1976-1978:

"On behalf of the City of Mississauga and Members of Council, I would like to express my deepest sympathies to the family, friends and loved ones of former Mississauga mayor, Ron Searle. The thoughts and prayers of Mississaugans are with all of you during this somber and difficult time.

"Mr. Searle passed away at the age of 96, and throughout his life, he remained steadfastly committed to public service.

"Communities across Canada, and around the world, can appreciate and celebrate Mr. Searle's life as a heroic World War II veteran. Mr. Searle fought bravely against the tyranny of the Nazi regime and defended the unwavering Canadian values of peace, respect for the rule of law, and democracy.

"It was the natural next step for Mr. Searle to participate in the democratic process and put his name forward for elected office. The people of Mississauga entrusted him to be their voice at City Hall; first as a councillor representing south Mississauga neighbourhoods, and later representing all residents as our City's mayor.

"Ron Searle's stewardship and leadership as both a councillor and as mayor, helped lay the foundation that would see Mississauga grow farm fields and fruit trees, into the vibrant, prosperous, and thriving world-class city we have today.

"Ron Searle Park, located in the community of Orchard Heights, continues to pay tribute to this remarkable individual who committed himself to shaping Mississauga's future for the better - both as a public servant and as a private citizen.

"I have requested that flags located at municipal buildings be lowered to half-staff until Mr. Searle's funeral."
